Newcastle manager Alan Pardew faces a lengthy absentee list ahead of Thursday’s crunch Europa League clash, with Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Mathier Debuchy (cup-tied), Davide Santon (hip), Cheikh Tiote (hamstring) and Haris Vuckic (knee) all set to miss the game.

Elsewhere, long-term absentee Ryan Taylor is targeting a return in time for the derby game against Sunderland on Sunday, but Fabricio Coloccini and Massadio Haidara are for a place on the bench against the Portuguese outfit after suffering from back and knee strains respectively.

Benfica boss Jorge Jesus faces very few injury worries ahead of the return leg, with Eduardo Salvio remaining a doubt after picking up a knee problem shortly prior to the first leg between the two sides.

  • Newcastle have beaten Metalist Kharkiv and Anzhi Makhachkala in the knockout stages so far, both by a solitary 1-0 aggregate scoreline.
  • Papiss Cisse has now scored four goals in the 90th minute this season after his last-gasp winner against Fulham.
  • The Senegal striker, along with Shola Ameobi, is the Magpies’ top scorer in the Europa League with three goals each.
  • Alan Pardew’s side have conceded just once at home in six games in the competition this term – that goal coming during the 1-1 draw with Maritimo in November.
  • Oscar Cardozo  is Benfica‘s top goalscorer this year with 28 goals, six of which have come in Europe.
  • The Portuguese outfit have scored 107 goals so far this season in all competitons.
  • They currently sit four points clear ahead of Porto at the top of the domestic league and are unbeaten in 25 games since the start of the season.

Benfica coach Jorge Jesus has very few injury problems to contend with ahead of the visit of Newcastle United in the Europa League on Thursday.

Argentina international attacker Eduardo Salvio (knee) is expected to miss out, while wholesale changes are not predicted following the side’s impressive 6-1 win over Rio Ave at the weekend.

Brazilian striker Lima would have been a likely candidate to make way for former Real Madrid and Bolton man Rodrigo, but he may well retain his place after scoring a hat-trick on Saturday.

Alan Pardew has a considerable number of fitness worries, but the returns of Davide Santon and Tim Krul will be boosts.

Massadio Haidara, Cheikh Tiote and Fabricio Coloccini could potentially be in contention for at least a place on the bench, but they remain doubts.

Ryan Taylor (knee) has joined up with the squad in Lisbon to train, but will definitely not be involved, while Haris Vuckic (knee), Mathieu Debuchy (hamstring) and Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring) will also be unavailable.

  • So far this season, Benfica have scored 102 goals in all competitions.
  • The Eagles have not lost at home in the Europa League since December 2008 when they were defeated by Metalist.
  • Jesus’ team are on a run of four consecutive wins in the competition.
  • Benfica’s last five quarter-finals with English opposition have resulted in elimination.
  • Newcastle have beaten Metalist Kharkiv and Anzhi Makhachkala in the knockout stages so far.
  • Pardew’s side have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four matches in this competition.
  • However, the Magpies have only managed two away wins all season.
  • Shola Ameobi is Newcastle’s top scorer in the Europa League with three goals in eight matches.

Roberto Mancini has a host of players returning from injury and is expected to make several changes from the 2-0 defeat at Everton on March 16.

Vincent Kompany is set for a return to the starting line-up after playing for Belgium during the international break, while Yaya Toure should return after illness. Sergio Aguero is also likely to make his comeback.

Newcastle United, meanwhile, have a trip to Benfica next Thursday and Alan Pardew could rest some key players, although Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Fabricio Coloccini (back) and Tim Krul (ankle) are out, while Yohan Cabaye (groin) is still a doubt.

  • A win for Manchester City will make it their seventh consecutive Premier League victory over Alan Pardew’s men.
  • City have beaten Newcastle 14 times in the Premier League; only against Aston Villa (18 times) have they won more.
  • Yaya Toure  has scored more league goals (three) against Newcastle than against any other Premier League side.
  • City have dropped seven points in their last seven league games at the Etihad Stadium, having only dropped six in the previous 36.
  • With 31, the Magpies have used more players in the top flight than any other side.
  • Newcastle have picked up just eight points on their travels this season; only Reading (five) have registered fewer.
  • Pardew’s men are the worst victims of late goals, having conceding 15 in the last 15 minutes of league matches; more than any other side.
  • The Magpies’ last – and only – win in the city of Manchester came against City at Maine Road in September 2000.

Anzhi vs Newcastle Europa League Preview: Magpies set for tough test against big-spending Russians

Newcastle Team celebrate

Anzhi have no new injury worries and go into the game with a full squad of players to choose from, with superstars such as Willian, Samuel Eto’o and Lassana Diarra all set to play from the start.

Newcastle could welcome back Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), but Fabricio Coloccini (back) has been ruled out by manager Alan Pardew while Papiss Cisse was not part of the 19-man squad.

Ryan Taylor (knee) is close to recovery, however he is unlikely to return to action until the end of the month.

Tim Krul (ankle) remains on the sidelines after picking up an injury in the last round against Metalist Kharkiv and Steve Harper’s absence with a knee injury means Rob Elliot will continue in goal.

  • Newcastle have faced Anzhi star Samuel Eto’o in European competition before, the Cameroonian was part of the Real Mallorca side that suffered a 7-1 aggregate Uefa Cup loss to the Magpies in 2004.
  • Shola Ameobi (pictured right) played in the second leg of that tie and will move level with Alan Shearer on 38 European appearances for Newcastle if the plays in both legs of this tie.
  • The Magpies have beaten a Guus Hiddink side in the past, as they overcame PSV Eindhoven over two legs in the quarter-finals of the 2003-04 Uefa Cup before losing to Marseille in the next round.
  • Anzhi have won all seven of their Europa League home games this season, scoring 12 times and conceding just once.
  • Hiddink’s side have only lost twice in their domestic league this term, with defeats against Rubin Kazan and CSKA Moscow both coming away from home.
  • As a football club, Anzhi are 99 years younger than Newcastle, having only been formed in 1991.
  • This tie marks the first time that Newcastle have faced Russian opposition in European competition.

Tottenham are without Jermain Defoe (ankle), who picked up an injury in the 1-0 win over West Brom, so Clint Dempsey is likely to start up front.

Though Togo have been knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations, Emmanuel Adebayor’s return from South Africa was delayed and he is not expected to start.

Sandro (knee) is out for the remainder of the season, though Younes Kaboul (also knee) will return to training next week and could be available within three weeks.

Newcastle have Cheikh Tiote available once more, with the midfielder’s Ivory Coast team having been knocked out of the Afcon by Nigeria, though he may have to settle for a spot on the bench.

Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring) remains absent, so Jonas Gutierrez and Yoan Gouffran will keep their places either side of Moussa Sissoko, fresh from his man-of-the-match display against Chelsea.

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League games, scoring 13 goals and conceding just four – and only Manchester United (two) have failed to score in fewer games than Spurs (three).
  • The White Hart Lane outfit have only conceded eight goals in their last 13 games, and have kept a clean sheet in six of their last eight home matches against Newcastle.
  • Clint Dempsey (pictured right), likely to deputise for the injured Jermain Defoe up front, has five goals in his last seven games for Spurs, and netted for USA in midweek.
  • Spurs have won 77.7 per cent of the league matches in which Gareth Bale has scored, though only two of the Welshman’s 11 Premier League goals have come at home this season.
  • No side has averaged more shots at home than Tottenham (22.7 per game), while 74% of the north London club’s goals have been in the second half of matches.
  • Newcastle recorded their first back-to-back victories of the season against Aston Villa and Chelsea – before that, Alan Pardew’s side had lost six of their previous eight games.
  • The Magpies have conceded 23 goals in their last 10 games, despite their woodwork also being struck a league-high 16 times this season.
  • The St James’ Park outfit have averaged more long balls per game (73) than any other side in the Premier League.
  • Only Aston Villa (51) have received more yellow cards than Newcastle (49), while no player has been booked more often than James Perch (eight).
  • Newcastle’s 3-2 victory over Chelsea last Saturday was the first time in 27 months that they came from behind to win a Premier League match – the last occasion was a 2-1 win against West Ham in October 2010.

Danny Simpson (toe), Ryan Taylor and Dan Gosling (both knee) remain injured, while new signing Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is not expected to usurp Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor in defence.

Arsenal vs Newcastle Preview

Arsene Wegner

Arsene Wenger has no new injury concerns following the 1-0 win over Wigan last Saturday.

Laurent Koscielny is back fit but is unlikely to replace either Thomas Vermaelen or Per Mertesacker in the Arsenal defence.

Abou Diaby (thigh) and Andre Santos (abdominal injury) are long-term absentees for the Gunners while Lukas Fabianski (ankle) is expected back towards the end of January.

Alan Pardew’s squad, on the other hand, has been ravaged by injuries and suspensions.

While Cheikh Tiote returns after missing the match against Manchester United with suspension, Mike Williamson will miss the trip to the Emirates after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season at Old Trafford.

Midfielder Vurnon Anita is also likely to miss out after being stretchered off following an Antonio Valencia tackle during the United defeat.

The Magpies are still assessing Hatem Ben Arfa’s injury (hamstring), though Pardew does not expect the Frenchman to be available for the next couple of games.

Jonas Gutierrez (leg) and Yohan Cabaye (groin) are expected to be out for around six to eight weeks, while defender Steven Taylor (hamstring) could return to action early next year.

  • Arsenal have scored at least two goals in five of their last six home matches against Newcastle United.
  • Mikel Arteta  has made an average of 87 passes per game this season, more than any other player.
  • The Gunners have not won back-to-back Premier League games at home since April.
  • Arsene Wenger has seen his side have a player sent off in three of their last four Premier League games against Newcastle.
  • Newcastle United have lost their last four away matches in the Premier League.
  • The Magpies have also conceded at least twice in eight of their last ten away games.
  • The last time Newcastle had fewer points after 19 games in the top-flight was 1988-89. They had 17 that year and were relegated at the end of the season.

Manchester United vs Newcastle Preview

Alex Ferguson

The only real injury problems Sir Alex Ferguson has are in midfield, with Anderson (hamstring) set to miss out until the trip to West Brom on December 29.

Nani (hamstring) and Shinji Kagawa (knee) will most likely return against Steve Clarke’s side at the Hawthorns asl well, so Ferguson may well call on the likes of Paul Scholes and Danny Welbeck to fill in the gaps in midfield.

Wayne Rooney could be dropped after a disappointing display at Swansea in which he was substituted, with Chicharito or Welbeck ready to take his place up front.

Alan Pardew has a number of fitness issues to contend with in his squad – Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring) and Dan Gosling (knee) have no set return dates, and are likely to miss the trip to Old Trafford.

Centre-back Steven Taylor (hamstring) is missing till January, while influential midfielder Yohan Cabaye (groin) is out until February.

Ryan Taylor (knee) will not be playing until March, and Haris Vukcic (knee) is likely to be out for the rest of the season, so the January transfer window cannot come soon enough for the Newcastle boss.

  • Manchester United have 21 points from a total of 24 at home this season, scoring 22 goals in the process.
  • Newcastle have won just once in their last 20 league league meetings with Manchester United, losing 14 and drawing five.
  • However, of the last four meetings between the sides, Ferguson’s men have only won once, with two draws and a victory for Pardew.
  • Newcastle have not won away in the league in eight attempts this season, losing four and drawing four.
  • Newcastle haven’t won at Old Trafford since 1972, with 30 games having been played in the process.
  • Robin van Persie  has five goals and three assists in his last seven games against Newcastle.
  • The Magpies have lost six of their last eight Premier League games.
  • The sides last met in October when Sir Alex Ferguson’s team won 3-0 at St James’ Park.

Newcastle vs Manchester City Preview

Roberto Mancini

Alan Pardew could be without influential midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), after he suffered a reaction after coming back from his injury in the defeat at Fulham.

Steven Taylor (hamstring) and Yohan Cabaye remain sidelined for the Magpies but winger Gabriel Obertan (toe) could return following a month out.

Vincent Kompany (groin) has missed training after limping out of last week’s Manchester derby and is likely to miss the trip to St James’ Park, while James Milner may return from a hamstring injury.

Gareth Barry will definitely be missing though, the England midfielder will serve a one-match ban for abusive and/or insulting language towards a match official during the Manchester derby.

Jack Rodwell (hamstring) is regaining fitness but Micah Richards (ankle) admitted this week he does not expect to return until February.

  • Newcastle have 10 points fewer than they did at this point last season.
  • Demba Ba has scored five goals in his last six Premier League appearances at St James’ Park.
  • Dan Gosling has scored in both of his Premier League appearances against Manchester City.
  • Manchester City have scored six goals in their last five Premier League away matches and four of those have been netted by substitutes.
  • City are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League away games and have kept five clean sheets in that run
  • Manchester City have won nine, lost none and drawn two of their last 11 Premier League games against Newcastle.

Bordeaux vs Newcastle Preview

Cisse and Ameobi

Bordeaux boss Francis Gillot will be hoping to welcome back Henri Saivet into his matchday squad for Thursday’s meeting, though Abdou Traore (thigh) is likely to be ruled out.

Alan Pardew remains without Yohan Cabaye (groin) and Steven Taylor (hamstring) for his side’s trip to France. The duo join longer-term absentees Dan Gosling (knee), Gabriel Obertan (toe) and Ryan Taylor (knee) on the injury list.

The Magpies’ chief creator and native Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring) is also a doubt for the clash.

  • Bordeaux midfielder Ludovic Obraniak’s career has seen him line up alongside both Papiss Cisse (at FC Metz) and Yohan Cabaye (at Lille).
  • The Ligue 1 outfit have not won in nine meetings with English sides but have come out of all their previous eight European home games victorious.
  • Bordeaux’s David Bellion  is familiar with the north east of England, having spent two somewhat undistinguished seasons at Sunderland. Now back in France, he has not scored a league goal since 2009.
  • Newcastle‘s 3-0 defeat of Wigan on Monday night was the first time that the club had scored three goals in a match since the visit of Bordeaux to St James’ Park at the start of October.
  • The Magpies have played 15 league games so far this season, in which they have netted 17 goals. Every one of those has been scored by a French speaker.

Match Preview: Liverpool vs Newcastle

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will be without long-term absentees Lucas Leiva (thigh), Fabio Borini (foot) and Martin Kelly (knee) for the game, but has no new injury news to report, with Glen Johnson and Pepe Reina both expected to return.

His opposite number Alan Pardew will be without Cheikh Tiote, with the combative midfielder serving the second of his three-game ban for a red card received against Sunderland.

Elsewhere, Demba Ba is expected to have a late fitness test on a shin injury while Ryan Taylor and Dan Gosling are ruled out with knee injuries and are not expected back for some time.

  • Liverpool won this fixture last season 3-1 courtesy of a Craig Bellamy double and a goal from captain Steven Gerrard . A Daniel Agger own goal provided the visitors with consolation.
  • That victory was the only game last season where Liverpool conceded first and then went on to win on home soil in the Premier League.
  • The Reds have scored just four goals in four games at home so far this term.
  • Brendan Rodgers’ side have also kept just two clean sheets in the league this campaign. Newcastlehave fared even worse, keeping just one.
  • Newcastle have drawn their last three away games in the top flight.
  • A win at Anfield would be the Magpies’ first since 1994.
  • Alan Pardew’s side won the last meeting between the two clubs, posting a 2-0 victory at home in April last season.
